The Miami Valley Fire District, Montgomery County, Ohio (population 50,000) is accepting applications for the position of Lateral or Entry Level Firefighter/Paramedic.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Firefighter/Paramedic shall perform the following duties pursuant to the direction of the Lieutenant or Battalion Chief:
- Firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying of hose lines, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
- Emergency medical services including administering first aid, CPR, medication, and other life saving procedures as required.
- Perform salvage operations.
- Receive fire and emergency medical alarms.
- Operate radio and other communication equipment.
- Inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.
- Participate in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous material, and related subjects.
- Maintain fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities.
- Perform minor repairs.
- Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; clean and wash walls and floors; care fore grounds around station; make minor repairs; wash, hang, and dry hose; wash, clean, polish maintain and test apparatus and equipment.
- Assist in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency medical activities.
- Present programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in the fire station while sitting, standing or walking and at emergency sites in varying and extreme weather conditions;
- When responding to emergencies, employees risk physical hazard from fire, smoke, chemicals, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and other hazardous materials, falling debris, unstable buildings and extreme heat;
- Administrative duties are primarily performed in an office environment that is normally temperature controlled with appropriate lighting;
Physical Requirements
- Must satisfactorily complete pre-employment examinations by a licensed healthcare provider;
- Physical exertion is required to climb ladders, pull hoses, move heavy objects, and crawl through tight spaces;
- Physical effort is required to lift materials, equipment, and persons exceeding 100 lbs;
- May be required to work at heights in excess of 100 feet;
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activities when noise levels may be loud.
Required Minimum Qualifications (*)
- 18 years of age with Valid State of Ohio Drivers License
- State of Ohio Level 2 Firefighter
- State of Ohio EMT (State of Ohio Paramedic within 18 months of hire)
- State of Ohio Fire Safety Inspector (within 18 months of hire)
- Valid CPAT or Firefighter Mile Passing Test by time of interview (for Entry-Level Only)
*Certifications must be maintained over the course of employment as a condition of employment within this classification.

- Base Pay Range – $62,200 to $88,612 (as of June 2024)

Candidate Physical Ability Testing (CPAT). CPAT was developed to create a fair method allowing fire departments to obtain a diverse pool of candidates who are physically capable of performing the tasks required.
- The CPAT test is administered through the Miami Valley Ohio Fire/EMS Alliance.
- Firefighter Mile is administered throught the National Training Network.
Candidates will take a written test through the National Testing Network (choose Miami Valley Fire-EMS Alliance)
Candidates will interview with the Fire Chief or their designee.
Candidates will go through a physical exam by a medical doctor.
Background Check and Verification
Candidates will submit finger prints as part of a background check and verification process.
Candidates will take a polygraph test.
